I have a question. I'm currently using a Yaesu FT-530 HT my only radio. I
can reach the local repeaters ok, but would like to reach farther out.
I've thought about installing a base antenna and wonder if it is possible
to attach any type of power amplifier to increase my output. Is this
possible with an HT? Or should I just start saving my money and get a base
unit?

Yes, it is possible and done quite frequently. RF Concepts, Mirage, and
other manufactures make 2m, 440, and 2m/440 amps of various output power
levels (and prices to match). Check in any radio equipment catalog for a
full listing. A basic 2m model will run about $200 (+/-) new.

And you can get them used for CONSIDERABLY less. A 2 in/30 out 2 meter
amplifier WITH preamp can be had for about $100 used, and sometimes
even less. I picked up an older VoCom 2 in/25 out 2 meter FM amp that
does the job. It's ugly. It's VERY small and gets REALLY HOT.
It also cost me $20 at a hamfest, and I've been using it for 6 years!
I picked up an identical one at a yard sale last year for a buck! And
it's in better shape than the first. Now there's one in each car.

As I understand it, early models had the audio deviation pot set too low
and the touch tone deviation set too high. The settings produced low
audio and DTMF tones were not accepted by repeaters. I also noticed that
the same early models had a different default frequency when reset as well
as some strange additional defaults that are changed when programming.
I do not know where the pot's are that must be adjusted. Has anyone
bought the service manual? I believe audio deviation is normally about
3.5 KHz and DTMF deviation is ~2.5 KHz.

I am just getting into amateur radio and would like some advice/opinions
on equipment. I am currently studying to take all test elements at one
time to get my Extra class license. In the meantime I have been kind of
looking around at radios and such just to get a feel for prices. I would
like to get the net hams' preferences/comments about rigs they use or have
used, things like quality, performance, etc. Initially I will be looking
at HF rigs, something post 1980 or so. I am also welcome your comments on
older rigs, especially some of the proven performers like Drake and
Collins. Information about VHF/UHF rigs is also appreciated as that
purchase will happen, just a bit further down the road.
Email or post

It sounds like it might be a PA unit, with perhaps different siren sounds
and things like that.....

Hi Trey:
It sounds extremely like an electronic fog horn/power hailer for use on a
boat. I used to have one built by (well, built by me, but the product of)
Heathkit, which was, in case anyone cares, a GREAT device which I stupidly
sold when I sold that boat.
FOG1 & FOG2 are different noise/silence patterns depending on whether
you're in offshore or inland waters (if memory serves) and AGND I assume
stands for "aground".
Sound reasonable? Was it really a mic jack you're used to seeing on a rig?
Or a simpler one since it's only a P.A. (Maybe an intercom, too,
depending on the model...)

Do the amplifiers for use with 2 meter HT's require a separate power
supply? That would up the ante in getting one.
